The History of Great Players for The Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Orioles – A Look at their Greatest Players

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

As most diehard fans of baseball know, the Baltimore Orioles began their life as a Major League Baseball (MLB) team in 1954. Formerly located in St. Louis – where they were known as the Browns – the Orioles have had a long history f victories and championships. This is probably news to most casual fans that are more familiar with the Orioles’ more recent track record of unsuccessful season. In their heyday, however, the Orioles won 6 Pennants in the American League, as well as a World Series Championship in 1966 which was repeated in 1970, and again in 1983. Much of that success has been the direct result of the many great players who have worn the Orioles’ uniform on the field.

Cal Ripken, Jr., the Ironman

The most loved Oriole of all time is definitely Cal Ripkin, Jr. Often referred to as the Ironman of Baseball, Ripken was 1982’s Rookie of the Year, and the MVP of the League in both 1983 and 1991. He holds the record for most games played as an Oriole, with more than 3,000, as well as the most hits with 3,184. He also had the most home runs; runs scored; and runs batted in (RBIs). Of course, none of his records are more well-known than his record 2,632 consecutive games on the field. You might think that Ripken’s longevity and reliability were simply the result of an injury-free career, but you would be mistaken. The Ironman had his fair share of minor injuries through the years, but just never let any of them keep him out of the lineup.

Frank Robinson, the not-so washed up acquisition

Back in 1966, the Orioles managed to acquire Frank Robinson from the Cincinnati Reds – who were sure that the onetime star was past his prime. The trade proved to be a steal for the Orioles who watched in awe as Robinson enjoyed resurgence that very year, topping the American League in home runs, batting average, and runs batted in. This, as you might expect, also netted him the American League MVP award for the year. During his time with the Orioles, Robinson batted .300, drove 179 balls out of the park, and had more than 500 RBIs. The Orioles rewarded his efforts by making his number the first in the history of the team to be retired.

The greatest Oriole pitcher

3-time Cy Young award winner Jim Palmer is, without a doubt, the greatest pitcher ever to step onto the mound in an Orioles uniform. With more than 260 wins, 558 games to his credit, 53 complete shutouts, and more than 2,000 strikeouts, Palmer is a legend amongst Baltimore fans – and deservedly so. Still the only MLB pitcher to compete in and win a World Series contest in each of three separate decades, Palmer’s longevity and winning capacity made the Orioles consistent contenders in the League. It is no wonder that today’s Orioles fans continue to look back longingly on the Palmer era.

The Worlds Largest Cocktail Party

Florida vs Georgia rivalry

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

This rivalry is a rivalry that comes to mind when people start listing SEC rivalries. “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” is the name given to the rivalry between the Gators of Florida and the Bulldogs of Georgia. However, the rivalry is officially known simply as the Florida-Georgia or the Georgia-Florida rivalry. You would know the home team by which team was listed first. The schools’ names are used instead of the former nickname for the rivalry because
of sensitivity issues. The nickname has stuck and the media has sometimes often referred to it. The Southeastern Conference, in 2006, asked 3 networks that air SEC football games to not use the nickname because it makes other people think there are alcoholic beverages at the games, when there are none.
The seating arrange at this game has included Georgia fans in one section and Florida fans in the next section, and so on. This created a contrasting color effect in the stands. The latest seating arrangement has Florida’s fans sitting behind where their team and coaches are at, with Georgia on the other side.
These schools have played 86 times in their history and even though Florida seems to have basically owned the Georgia Bulldogs in their last 2 decades (winning 16 of 19 matchups), Georgia still
leads this series all-time 47-38-2 (according to Georgia’s record book). However, if you ask die-hard Florida fans, they will tell you that their record against Georgia is 46-38-2. Florida’s 16-3 record against Georgia since 1990 is just about equal to Georgia’s dominance over Florida in the ’70s and ’80s. During that time, Georgia went 15-5. The disparity in the two teams’ record books is a 52-0 Georgia win over Florida win in Macon, Ga in 1904. This is controversial because Florida didn’t have an official team until two years later (1906).
Georgia fans do have reason to be upset about Florida closing the margin of victories.  I mean the games between these two schools are not a typical home-home series as you would expect in most other rivalries. This means that the games are not played in Gainesville or Athens.
They are played in Jacksonville, FL, which is supposed to be a neutral site.
This showdown between two division rivals is played at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on the last Saturday in October. This year’s meeting is scheduled for October 31, 2009. Lately, there has been much talk about maybe moving the games to the Georgia Dome sporadically. The site of the game somewhat gives Florida a home field advantage. Jacksonville, the current site of this rivalry’s games, is 342 miles from Athens, GA, while Gainesville, FL is only 73 miles away. I’m sure the Florida fans just love this! This is crucial because Florida’s players can get there by bus within two hours and Georgia’s players have to fly there. The date of the rivalry has caused problems too. In 2000, Georgia changed fall break in response to the weekend that the game would be held. This date change came about due to many students missing days out of class and car accidents as students rushed to go to Jacksonville, FL. If the schools are going to play at a neutral site, then it makes economical sense to hold the games in Jacksonville. The stadium holds more people than the Georgia Dome. It wouldn’t make any sense to lose all the money that is
guaranteed to be made just by having it at another venue. The series between Florida and Georgia will remain in Jacksonville through the 2016 season.

Ole Miss

By Alteo On May 23, 2011 No Comments

‘Ole Miss,’ as you may have guessed is the affectionate way the University of Mississippi is popularly referred to in that state. The Rebels are the team which represents the university in the NCAA Division I-A FBS. It is affiliated with the Southeastern Conference.

The team was born in 1893 with the encouragement of Dr. A. L. Bondurant who was himself selected by the student team as their first coach. The very first game played by the team in its inaugural season was against Southwest Baptist University, presently Union University, of Jackson City. The game, played on November of 1893 was a route 54-0 in favor of Mississippi. Ole Miss won three more games of the total of five that they played then.

Football was suspended in Mississippi in 1897 due to rash of yellow fever and again in 1943, in preparation for the Second World War.

While the process of selecting the national champion in football annually is out of the hands of the NCAA, a number of polling organizations publish their own positions on the matter. In 1955, 1959,1960 and 1962, the Rebels were declared as National Champions by some polls of minor significance. With the major polls such as Associated Press and United Press, the team was either placed in second or third place. However, in 2003, Ole Miss finally won the title by vote.

The Rebels are noted for being the first football players to fly to the site of their game. The flight was to Memphis and it happened during the 1937 series. The team is also the first broadcast team in history. The occasion was their 1948 match with Memphis.

Houston Nutt became the teams 36th coach in 2007. A few weeks before he had just coached the Arkansas Razorbacks in their win over the Rebels. During the 2009 Cotton Bowl Classic Butt led the team to a 9-4 victory. The Rebels defeated the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Gators were to be proclaimed later as BSC National Champions.

Every year the Rebels have rivalry matches with chosen universities. The Rebels and Mississippi State University vie for the Egg Bowl. Currently the Rebels are leading in this series with 60 to 40.Another rivalry game is the Magnolia Bowl which is played against Louisiana State University. The series is currently dominated by LSU with 55-39-4.

Another rivalry series is that played against the Vanderbilt University Commodores. The two teams are co-founders of the Southeastern Conference and this is one of the oldest rivalries of the Rebels. They have the lead with 42-13-2.

Among all football programs the Ole Miss Rebels is ranked third. It bagged 21 wins in 33 Bowl events. The College Football Hall of Fame includes ten of their members. The Pro Football Hall of Fame claims 2 players, the Helms Athletic Foundation has included 3 and the National Quarterback Club has one.

Youth Soccer is an Ideal Game for Kids

By Alteo On May 22, 2011 No Comments

The version of soccer that has become such a popular game for kids in the US is not just a whittled down version of the rough and tumble game that is so popular in England and South America. In reality, youth soccer includes all games played with the soccer ball. That statement may come as a surprise to most people who are under the impression that the only game kids play in soccer clubs is traditional soccer. But in those sports clubs, even practice routines are played as games.

The real soccer professionals spend hours alone training themselves with the sole purpose of playing well against their opponents. In youth soccer clubs, the atmosphere is entirely different. That is because the majority of members are usually there to have fun while training to attain some proficiency in the game. The trainers have to create training sessions that are interesting enough for kids who are not driven by the dream of playing in the soccer leagues someday.

Alternatively, the kids might have a contest among themselves as to who can ram the ball with his head the farthest or who can dribble the ball on his knees the longest. As you can see by now, youth soccer includes many derivative games that kids of all ages can play.

On the internet, there are sites where you can read descriptions of derivative soccer games for kids which are based on practice routines. Some of the game routines that you can read are so simple and safe that they can be played in your own backyard, if it is big enough. In fact, it might be a good idea for you, if the kids in your neighborhood are idle on weekends to buy yourself a soccer ball, read up on the simple games that can be played with it on the web and start your own neighborhood soccer club.

Soccer clubs also have serious training for full blown professional games for those of their members who are aspiring to become professionals one day. Although soccer in the US is not as prestigious as it is in the UK, for instance, things seem to be picking up for the sport with so many associations mushrooming in many states.

Throughout the US there are many youth clubs who have teams participating in these games. A great number of these clubs are professionally managed enough to become members of the United States Soccer Federation. That is the organization that manages soccer in the US. The largest individual soccer association in the US is appropriately called US Youth Soccer.

With about a million members today, US Youth Soccer is composed mostly of volunteers many of whom are coaches who have found their calling teaching young people how to become proficient in the sport.

In deference to their many young members, these clubs usually have a distinct sub-groupings to segregate those who play for fun and recreation from those who want to compete in the national league games.

Most kids will fit in with the better soccer clubs. The US Youth Soccer organization, being the largest of these clubs is worth looking into. They have different programs for different age groups. They also adapt their trainings and games to the capability of the member and his purpose in joining the club. Kids can join just to have fun with other kids. On the other hand, they may also join to train themselves seriously for professional soccer.
