USC Trojans

By admin On October 31, 2009 No Comments

USC Torjans recorded their 10 win and were number one in Pac-10 with a conference tally of 8-1 and overall tally of 12-1 in 2008. USC Torjans are again favorites to win this year’s Pac-10 championship and are rated no 5 in preseason polls to win NCAA football championship . Based in Los Angles, the team has their home ground at Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. USC Trojans tasted success on the signing day by getting Pete Carroll but they lost Manti Te’o (Linebacker), Matt Barkley (quarterback) & Vortaze Burfict (middle linebacker). Still they manage to sign 10 out of the top 100 rated players. USC Torjans were rated fourth nationally. They have signed two junior college players, a 330 pound DT Hebron Fangupo and K-P Jacob Harfman for inside position and kicking and punting jobs. USC Torjans will not play in the regular season against UCLA in 2009 but will play against Arizona on December 5th.

Washington State

By admin On October 27, 2009 No Comments

Things didn’t go much better for Paul Wolff’s Washington State Cougars . The program only managed two victories, against Portland State and Washington. If Washington’s offence was bad, then the Cougars were appalling. Three times they were shut out in consecutive defeats to Southern California and Stanford and two matches later at Arizona State. Only managing to score over 20 points once, in the 28-59 defeat to Arizona, the Cougars only restricted their opponents to under 20 points twice all season. Five of the losses saw Washington State give up more than 50 points to their opponents and Oregon, Oregon State and Southern Cal all got past the 60 point mark.

Washington Huskies

By admin On October 25, 2009 No Comments

The Washington Huskies have hit rock bottom in 2008, posting a 0-12 record and last having a winning season back in 2007. Steve Sarkisian’s first year in charge is going to be a tough one – the team will need to undergo multiple changes if they are to have any success on the field – the offense struggled to make an impact as the Huskies only managed to score over 20 points twice last season and the defense limited the opposition to under 20 points only on one occasion against Washington State. A 0-56 defeat to USC was the first game after coach Tyrone Willingham’s departure and summarised the poor state of affairs at the Husky Stadium.

Oregon State Beavers

By admin On October 23, 2009 No Comments

Mike Riley’s second stint as the Oregon State Beavers coach is going a lot better than his first one even though he could be credited with the reversal of fortunes at Reser Stadium. In the late nineties, he only managed eight wins in two years but for the team that averaged only two wins a year under Jerry Pettibone, the five that Riley guided the Beavers to in 1998 was their highest number of wins in 27 years. Since his reappointment in 2003, Riley has led Oregon State to five Bowl games in six years and has won every single one, the most recent coming in one of the lowest scoring games in history, a 3-0 win over Pittsburgh in the Sun Bowl. Posting a 9-4 record for two years in a row, the Beavers have finished in the top three for three years straight. A poor start to the season with defeats to Stanford and Penn State didn’t fill the fans with much confidence especially with a match against number 1 ranked USC coming up. A 45-7 win over Hawaii was a must before what was seen as a routine win for USC. But the Beavers shocked college football world by beating the favourites 27-21. Oregon State went on to win seven of their remaining nine games and triumphed in the Bowl game.

UCLA Bruins

By admin On October 21, 2009 No Comments

Rick Neuheisel’s first season in charge of the UCLA Bruins was the program’s second losing season in a row finishing a disappointing eight in the Pac-10. An overtime win over 18th ranked Tennessee seemed a perfect start for the new coach but three consecutive losses followed including a 0-59 demolition at the hands of BYU. UCLA didn’t look convincing at home to Arizona and despite rallying in the fourth quarter against Fresno State, were unable to overturn the deficit, losing 31-36 in the end. In the Conference opener, the Bruins comfortably beat Washington State 28-3 handing their new coach a 6-0 career record against the Cougars. A loss to Oregon was followed by a win against Stanford but UCLA lost four of their next five games and did not make the postseason for the first time since 1999.

Stanford Cardinal

By admin On October 19, 2009 No Comments

Stanford Cardinal have not been to postseason since 2001 and last season was another disappointing one for Jim Harbaugh who entered his second year in charge. An opening weekend win against Oregon State was followed by 17-41 loss at Arizona State and a 14-31 defeat to TCU. Cardinal seemed to have steadied the ship with back-to-back wins against San Jose State and Washington, but a defeat at Notre Dame denied the program a continuation of their streak. The Cardinal road form was poor as they only managed one win on their travels at Washington. Following a 58-0 shutout of Washington State, Cardinal went down to three consecutive losses at Oregon, at home to USC and again on the road to California finishing the season with a 5-7 record, narrowly missing out on a Bowl game invitation.

Central Florida Knights

By admin On October 17, 2009 No Comments

After winning their first Conference USA title in 2007, UCF Knights were expected to have a good 2008. A 17-0 win over S.C. State seemed to signal another good season but the Knights won only one of their next eight games and by November 8th had no chance of making a Bowl game. The second win of the season came against SMU which gave the program some hope but five straight losses ensured that wins at Marshall and Memphis would not help the Knights reach post season. The last game of 2008 saw the Knights shut out 0-15 by UAB.

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles

By admin On October 15, 2009 No Comments

Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles were in danger of losing their 14 year winning season streak after a dismal start to their 2008 campaign. An opening win against Louisiana-Lafayette was followed by a road loss at Auburn and road win at Arkansas State. What followed was a bunch of erratic home performances with consecutive losses to Marshall, UTEP and Boise State. The Eagles weren’t much better on the road either, losing at Rice and Memphis and entering the finishing straight of the season with a 2-6 record. Southern Miss had to win all four of their remaining matches to guarantee the continuation of their streak and an expected postseason berth. They destroyed UAB 70-14 in the Homecoming game and then successfully travelled to beat UCF 17-6. The win against eventual champions East Carolina meant that the Eagles had to travel to SMU and win to ensure a chance to extend the winning streak to 15 seasons. They beat SMU 28-12 and then triumphed over Troy in overtime in the New Orleans Bowl, finishing 7-6 for the season and protecting their streak – only Florida State, University of Florida and Virginia Tech have better streaks in the nation.

Memphis Tigers

By admin On October 13, 2009 No Comments

Tommy West’s Memphis Tigers started 2008 in the worst possible fashion. A road loss to Mississippi was followed by a home loss to Rice and then another road defeat at Marshall by 16 points to 17. The Tigers bounced back and recorded two home wins against Nicholls State and Arkansas State before going on the road and beating Alabama-Birmingham in a closely fought contest at Legion Field. Postseason aspirations took a blow following back-to-back losses to Louisville and at East Carolina but wins against Southern Miss and Southern Methodist meant that the Tigers needed one win from two games to guarantee a Bowl game appearance. They were beaten by Central Florida but in the last game of the season, thumped Tulane 45-6 to ensure a Bowl game. They appeared in the St.Petersburg Open where they were comprehensively beaten by South Florida.

Marshall Thundering Herd

By admin On October 11, 2009 No Comments

2008 was a disappointing year for the Marshall Thundering Herd as the program recorded a 4-8 losing season and did not make postseason play. The team got off to a pretty good start with wins over Illinois State, Memphis and Southern Miss only losing at Wisconsin. A 3-27 loss to West Virginia was followed by 10-33 loss at home to Cincinatti and then by a tight 21-23 defeat at UAB in Birmingham. The Herd’s only other win would come on October 28th as they defeated Houston 37-23. They then fell to four successive defeats to end all hopes of an invitation to a bowl game. A 16-19 defeat at East Carolina, 14-30 loss to UCF and defeats at Rice and at home to Tulsa meant that Marshall only won a single game since September 2008. In 2009, they will start off with non-conference games against Southern Illinois, West Virginia and Bowling Green.
