Pete is Jumping Ship and Headed to Seatlle

By admin On January 10, 2010No Comments

The chief executive of the Seattle Seahawks is headed to California to meet with Pete Carroll, as the struggling team closes in on a deal with the charismatic coach at Southern California.

A Seahawks spokesman confirmed Saturday night that team CEO Tod Leiweke will fly to Los Angeles on Sunday to interview Carroll for the coaching position and that the talks could last into Monday morning.

The Seahawks still do not have an agreement despite widespread reports, but are closing in on a coaching contract, according to a league official with direct knowledge of Seattle’s coaching search.

The official told The Associated Press Saturday the team is in “discussions” with Carroll and does not plan on giving him the additional title of president. The official added the Seahawks will hire a general manager and coach separately.

“No, they do not have an agreement. They are not there,” the official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity because the Seahawks are not commenting on how far talks have progressed. “(Seattle) would not name him GM or president—for obvious reasons.”

The last time the Seahawks gave a coach dual authority as a GM was in 1999, when they lured Mike Holmgren from Green Bay. By 2003, they had stripped Holmgren of the GM duties—and only after he was simply the coach did the franchise realize its finest seasons and make its only Super Bowl.

When asked if Carroll will become the eighth coach in Seattle’s 34-year history, the official said all signs point that way, just “not so fast” as has been reported.

Carroll coached the New York Jets and New England Patriots a decade ago and has spent the last nine years at USC. He is under consideration by a Seattle team that went 5-11 this season and fired coach Jim Mora on Friday after one miserable season.

ESPN, which hired Carroll to provide analysis for this week’s national championship game, said Carroll had reached a preliminary coaching agreement.

The Los Angeles Times had reported that the Seahawks—owned by Microsoft Corp. tycoon Paul Allen, for whom money is no limitation—are believed to be offering Carroll a five-year contract worth $7 million a season to be president and coach. That would be a raise of more than $2 million annually on what Carroll is thought to be earning at USC.

Carroll’s agent, Gary Uberstine, did not return calls and e-mails from the AP on Friday and Saturday.

The Seahawks interviewed Minnesota defensive coordinator Leslie Frazier on Saturday, something that by the league’s Rooney Rule had to happen before any offer can be made to Carroll. Teams must interview minority candidates for head coaching jobs.

The Seahawks are 9-23 since their last playoff game in January 2008. Four weeks ago they forced general manager and president Tim Ruskell to resign. Friday’s firing of Mora, who had three years and $12 million remaining on his contract, left Seattle without a coach, general manager or president less than four years after reaching the Super Bowl.

Carroll was 6-10 in 1994 with the Jets and then 27-21 while twice reaching the playoffs from 1997-99 with the Patriots. He then restored a dynasty at USC beginning in 2001.

This opportunity is unique for Carroll. The Seahawks still do not have a GM, so he could conceivably have authority over football matters as he has at USC, and far more than he would have had filling any of the NFL coaching openings to which he’s been connected in recent winters.

This was perhaps the best time to leave the Trojans since he arrived in 2001. USC’s string of seven consecutive Pac-10 titles ended with four losses this season. And the school has been under several years of NCAA scrutiny for alleged improprieties on Carroll’s team and in athletic director Mike Garrett’s beleaguered department.

When receiver Damian Williams announced he would enter the NFL, the news release of his departure Friday night didn’t include a comment from Carroll, who often lavishes praise on his early-entry candidates.

If Carroll is indeed leaving college, USC’s recruits must now decide whether to honor their commitments to the Trojans or re-enter the recruiting derby late in process.

University of Washington coach Steve Sarkisian left his friend Carroll and the Trojans 12 months ago for his first head coaching job. He was asked if he’d like to be a head man in the same city as his mentor.

“That would be kind of fun,” Sarkisian said. “He’s a great coach.”

Tennessee Vols

By admin On November 20, 2009 No Comments

Phillip Fulmer’s 16 year stint as Tennessee Volunteers coach came to an end at the end of last season after Vols posted a 5-7 record with the team lacking in offense. Former Oakland Raiders coach Lane Kiffin has been appointed as Fulmer’s replacement and since then the coaching roster has seen some major changes. Dave Clawson’s appointment as offensive coordinator at the start of 2008 led to the demise of Fulmer so it remains to be seen whether the new changes will have a positive effect on the Vols. After the 2008 Outback win against Wisconsin, the Vols been less that convincing and will rely on players like Dan Williams, NFL bound defensive tackle, to support a different defensive philosophy introduced by Monte Kiffin since his appointment as defensive coordinator in Knoxville. With the Vols rebuilding, it’s difficult to see them posing a major threat to the rest of the SEC but a fresh start may be just what Tennessee needed.

South Carolina Gamecocks

By admin On November 18, 2009 No Comments

If there is one team that needs to have a good season, it’s the South Carolina Gamecocks . Impressive wins over Tennessee and Arkansas improved the Cocks to 7-3 but three consecutive losses brought them back down to earth. The 31-10 loss to Iowa in the Outback Bowl followed the worst loss of Steve Spurrier’s career to his former Gators side in 2008. While the Cocks made three bowls in four seasons under Spurrier, the 2006 win over Houston in the Liberty Bowl represented South Carolina’s best season since the start of the century. Experienced center Garrett Anderson has been named to the Rimington Trophy Watch List after featuring in all 13 matches for the Cocks last year.

Kentucky Wildcats

By admin On November 16, 2009 No Comments

Following a disappointing 8-6 season in 2008 despite four consecutive wins at the start of it, Kentucky Wildcats did manage an impressive 25-19 win over East Carolina to claim the 2009 Liberty Bowl – coach Rich Brooks’ third consecutive bowl after 2006 and 2007 Music Bowl triumphs. The upcoming season will see Kentucky field the second most experienced offense behind the Bulldogs with Zip Duncan and Justin Jeffries making 48 starts between them. Center Jorge Gonzalez will receive a boost after being named to the Rimington Trophy watch list while cornerback Trevor Lindley and linebacker Micah Johnson are expected to deliver after being included in the SEC Top 30 list. Defensive end Jeremy Jarmon’s career at Kentucky is over, however, after accidentally taking a supplement containing a banned substance. The senior Wildcat is ineligible for the 2009 season, unfortunately bring his collegiate career to a premature end.

Georgia Bulldogs

By admin On November 14, 2009 No Comments

Georgia Bulldogs had another 10-win season in 2008 and have now gone six out of seven seasons with more than 10 victories. The 24-12 win over Michigan State in the Capital One Bowl was their second Bowl in as many years and things coach Mark Richt’s sixth in eight attempts. As he embarks on his ninth season with the Bulldogs, he will be hoping that the injuries that affected the team last term won’t be such a big problem this time round. The pre-bowl practices put greater emphasis on defense and Georgia look to build on that during fall camp. With quarterback Matthew Stafford off to the NFL, Bulldogs will look to Joe Cox and Logan Gray to fight for the position which will be key if the Dawgs are to win the SEC championship for the first time since 2005.

Florida Gators

By admin On November 12, 2009 No Comments

The fairytale that was Florida Gators’ run to their second national championship in three years last year should spur them on to attempt winning back-to-back titles for the first time in their history. After a memorable 13-1 season, which included fourth consecutive win over Tennessee and demolition of former coach Steve Spurrier’s South Carolina 56-6, Gators will look forward to Urban Meyer’s fifth season in charge with confidence. Despite losing key players to the NFL since the end of the season, including long snapper James Smith, Florida will be determined not to have a poor run as defending champions and avoid the disappointment of 2007. With Southeastern Conference securing a $55 million contract with CBS, Florida will defend their title in the most televised conference in the country come September.

Arizona State Sun Devils

By admin On November 10, 2009 No Comments

Arizona State University’s team Arizona Sun Devils is based in Tempe, Arizona. The home ground is Sun Devil Stadium at Frank Kush Field. Arizona Sun Devil is seventh in Pac-10 ranking ahead of UCLA, Washington State University and University of Washington. With a conference tally of 4-5 and overall tally of 5-7 in 2008, it lost the sixth place to Stanford whose tally is the same on points. Arizona Sun Devil start their 2009 season on September 5th with their first game against Idaho State. Danny Sullivan, the quarter back has to prove himself this season after a 5-7 season last year, as ASU defense is aggressive and physical. The young defense of Arizona Sun Devil is easy to spot and ready to hit but it is the offense which has many holes and hence make any prediction difficult. The team is not in 25 Top teams nationally but they have the potential to be.

Arizona Wildcats

The team of the University of Arizona at Tuscon, Arizona is called Arizona Wildcats. They were number fifth in 2008 standing of Pac-10 with an overall tally of 8-5 and conference tally of 5-4. The team home ground is Arizona Stadium. Arizona Wildcats start the season with Central Michigan on September 5th followed by a trip to Iowa. Arizona Wildcats need to concentrate on first ten games as their last two games are really tough with USC and ASU. Mike Stoops ,coach of the team is working on a ” great defense” but without Willie Tuitiama in quarter back position for the first time in four seasons, it is going to be tough. Bryson Beirene, Matt Scott and Nick Foles are in the running for QB position. The offensive lineup needs also to be strengthened; Philip Garcia and Adam Grant may be the answer. Arizona Wildcats will have to work hard to make an impression this season as they are not in top 25 teams nationally in college football.

Cal Golden Bears

By admin On November 6, 2009 No Comments

University of California ,Berkley team called California Golden Bears were fourth in the 2008 standing of Pac-10 with conference tally 6-3 and overall tally of 9-4. The team home ground is Calfornia Memorial Stadium. Cal Golden Bears start as a favorite in Pac-10 with Oregon Ducks and OSU Beavers to break the USC Torjans hold on the game. Cal Golden Bears start the 2009 season as a team which is among Top 25 teams nationally in preseason polls. The first match is with Minnesota followed by home game with Maryland but their toughest match is with Oregon Ducks on Sept 28th, which may set the tone in the early season of things to come. Jahid Best, tailback is the best in the league and Center back Syd’Quan is also a star to watch but quarter back position needs a careful look. Jeff Tedford, their coach is confident of finding right person for quarterback spot from Brock Mansion, Ross Bostock , Kevin Riley .

Oregon State Beavers

By admin On November 4, 2009 No Comments

Oregon State Beavers were a close third in Pac-10 standing with conference tally of 7-2 and overall tally of 9-4. OSU Beavers lost the Civil War to Oregon Ducks in 2008. Oregon State Beavers are based in Corvallis and its football home ground is Reser Stadium. They have added 320 pound OL Michael Philipp, Wide Receiver Reggie Dunn and Wide Receiver Markus Wheaton Chandler and Linebacker Michael Doctor. These players will add to the talent and skill of the team. Oregon State Beavers start the season with Cincinnati and are among top 25 teams voted nationally in national preseason polls.

Oregon Ducks

By admin On November 2, 2009 No Comments

Oregon Ducks is the team of University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon. It was second in 2008 standings of Pac-10 with an overall tally of 10-3 and conference tally of 7-2. The team also won Holiday Bowl against Oklahoma State. The team’s football home ground is called Autzen Stadium at Rich brooks fields. Oregon Ducks starts this season with Boise State in September followed by Utah and Purdue. Under a new coach Chip Kelly, who was earlier the offensive coordinator under former coach Mike Bellotti , the team is rated second after USC Torjan to win a top spot in Pac-10. Various preseason polls that have been conducted nationwide put the Oregon Ducks between positions 10 and 15. Oregon Ducks have lost Chris Harper who was recruited as quarter back but who switched to wide receiver as a freshman. He is a third high profile player to leave Ducks after wide receiver Aaron Pflugrad and quarter back Justin Roper. The team has enough talent and is still a force to reckon with.
