The History of Great Players for The Baltimore Orioles

Baltimore Orioles – A Look at their Greatest Players

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

As most diehard fans of baseball know, the Baltimore Orioles began their life as a Major League Baseball (MLB) team in 1954. Formerly located in St. Louis – where they were known as the Browns – the Orioles have had a long history f victories and championships. This is probably news to most casual fans that are more familiar with the Orioles’ more recent track record of unsuccessful season. In their heyday, however, the Orioles won 6 Pennants in the American League, as well as a World Series Championship in 1966 which was repeated in 1970, and again in 1983. Much of that success has been the direct result of the many great players who have worn the Orioles’ uniform on the field.

Cal Ripken, Jr., the Ironman

The most loved Oriole of all time is definitely Cal Ripkin, Jr. Often referred to as the Ironman of Baseball, Ripken was 1982’s Rookie of the Year, and the MVP of the League in both 1983 and 1991. He holds the record for most games played as an Oriole, with more than 3,000, as well as the most hits with 3,184. He also had the most home runs; runs scored; and runs batted in (RBIs). Of course, none of his records are more well-known than his record 2,632 consecutive games on the field. You might think that Ripken’s longevity and reliability were simply the result of an injury-free career, but you would be mistaken. The Ironman had his fair share of minor injuries through the years, but just never let any of them keep him out of the lineup.

Frank Robinson, the not-so washed up acquisition

Back in 1966, the Orioles managed to acquire Frank Robinson from the Cincinnati Reds – who were sure that the onetime star was past his prime. The trade proved to be a steal for the Orioles who watched in awe as Robinson enjoyed resurgence that very year, topping the American League in home runs, batting average, and runs batted in. This, as you might expect, also netted him the American League MVP award for the year. During his time with the Orioles, Robinson batted .300, drove 179 balls out of the park, and had more than 500 RBIs. The Orioles rewarded his efforts by making his number the first in the history of the team to be retired.

The greatest Oriole pitcher

3-time Cy Young award winner Jim Palmer is, without a doubt, the greatest pitcher ever to step onto the mound in an Orioles uniform. With more than 260 wins, 558 games to his credit, 53 complete shutouts, and more than 2,000 strikeouts, Palmer is a legend amongst Baltimore fans – and deservedly so. Still the only MLB pitcher to compete in and win a World Series contest in each of three separate decades, Palmer’s longevity and winning capacity made the Orioles consistent contenders in the League. It is no wonder that today’s Orioles fans continue to look back longingly on the Palmer era.

The Worlds Largest Cocktail Party

Florida vs Georgia rivalry

Click edit above to add content to this empty capsule.

This rivalry is a rivalry that comes to mind when people start listing SEC rivalries. “The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” is the name given to the rivalry between the Gators of Florida and the Bulldogs of Georgia. However, the rivalry is officially known simply as the Florida-Georgia or the Georgia-Florida rivalry. You would know the home team by which team was listed first. The schools’ names are used instead of the former nickname for the rivalry because
of sensitivity issues. The nickname has stuck and the media has sometimes often referred to it. The Southeastern Conference, in 2006, asked 3 networks that air SEC football games to not use the nickname because it makes other people think there are alcoholic beverages at the games, when there are none.
The seating arrange at this game has included Georgia fans in one section and Florida fans in the next section, and so on. This created a contrasting color effect in the stands. The latest seating arrangement has Florida’s fans sitting behind where their team and coaches are at, with Georgia on the other side.
These schools have played 86 times in their history and even though Florida seems to have basically owned the Georgia Bulldogs in their last 2 decades (winning 16 of 19 matchups), Georgia still
leads this series all-time 47-38-2 (according to Georgia’s record book). However, if you ask die-hard Florida fans, they will tell you that their record against Georgia is 46-38-2. Florida’s 16-3 record against Georgia since 1990 is just about equal to Georgia’s dominance over Florida in the ’70s and ’80s. During that time, Georgia went 15-5. The disparity in the two teams’ record books is a 52-0 Georgia win over Florida win in Macon, Ga in 1904. This is controversial because Florida didn’t have an official team until two years later (1906).
Georgia fans do have reason to be upset about Florida closing the margin of victories.  I mean the games between these two schools are not a typical home-home series as you would expect in most other rivalries. This means that the games are not played in Gainesville or Athens.
They are played in Jacksonville, FL, which is supposed to be a neutral site.
This showdown between two division rivals is played at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium on the last Saturday in October. This year’s meeting is scheduled for October 31, 2009. Lately, there has been much talk about maybe moving the games to the Georgia Dome sporadically. The site of the game somewhat gives Florida a home field advantage. Jacksonville, the current site of this rivalry’s games, is 342 miles from Athens, GA, while Gainesville, FL is only 73 miles away. I’m sure the Florida fans just love this! This is crucial because Florida’s players can get there by bus within two hours and Georgia’s players have to fly there. The date of the rivalry has caused problems too. In 2000, Georgia changed fall break in response to the weekend that the game would be held. This date change came about due to many students missing days out of class and car accidents as students rushed to go to Jacksonville, FL. If the schools are going to play at a neutral site, then it makes economical sense to hold the games in Jacksonville. The stadium holds more people than the Georgia Dome. It wouldn’t make any sense to lose all the money that is
guaranteed to be made just by having it at another venue. The series between Florida and Georgia will remain in Jacksonville through the 2016 season.

Ole Miss

By Alteo On May 23, 2011 No Comments

‘Ole Miss,’ as you may have guessed is the affectionate way the University of Mississippi is popularly referred to in that state. The Rebels are the team which represents the university in the NCAA Division I-A FBS. It is affiliated with the Southeastern Conference.

The team was born in 1893 with the encouragement of Dr. A. L. Bondurant who was himself selected by the student team as their first coach. The very first game played by the team in its inaugural season was against Southwest Baptist University, presently Union University, of Jackson City. The game, played on November of 1893 was a route 54-0 in favor of Mississippi. Ole Miss won three more games of the total of five that they played then.

Football was suspended in Mississippi in 1897 due to rash of yellow fever and again in 1943, in preparation for the Second World War.

While the process of selecting the national champion in football annually is out of the hands of the NCAA, a number of polling organizations publish their own positions on the matter. In 1955, 1959,1960 and 1962, the Rebels were declared as National Champions by some polls of minor significance. With the major polls such as Associated Press and United Press, the team was either placed in second or third place. However, in 2003, Ole Miss finally won the title by vote.

The Rebels are noted for being the first football players to fly to the site of their game. The flight was to Memphis and it happened during the 1937 series. The team is also the first broadcast team in history. The occasion was their 1948 match with Memphis.

Houston Nutt became the teams 36th coach in 2007. A few weeks before he had just coached the Arkansas Razorbacks in their win over the Rebels. During the 2009 Cotton Bowl Classic Butt led the team to a 9-4 victory. The Rebels defeated the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Gators were to be proclaimed later as BSC National Champions.

Every year the Rebels have rivalry matches with chosen universities. The Rebels and Mississippi State University vie for the Egg Bowl. Currently the Rebels are leading in this series with 60 to 40.Another rivalry game is the Magnolia Bowl which is played against Louisiana State University. The series is currently dominated by LSU with 55-39-4.

Another rivalry series is that played against the Vanderbilt University Commodores. The two teams are co-founders of the Southeastern Conference and this is one of the oldest rivalries of the Rebels. They have the lead with 42-13-2.

Among all football programs the Ole Miss Rebels is ranked third. It bagged 21 wins in 33 Bowl events. The College Football Hall of Fame includes ten of their members. The Pro Football Hall of Fame claims 2 players, the Helms Athletic Foundation has included 3 and the National Quarterback Club has one.

Youth Soccer is an Ideal Game for Kids

By Alteo On May 22, 2011 No Comments

The version of soccer that has become such a popular game for kids in the US is not just a whittled down version of the rough and tumble game that is so popular in England and South America. In reality, youth soccer includes all games played with the soccer ball. That statement may come as a surprise to most people who are under the impression that the only game kids play in soccer clubs is traditional soccer. But in those sports clubs, even practice routines are played as games.

The real soccer professionals spend hours alone training themselves with the sole purpose of playing well against their opponents. In youth soccer clubs, the atmosphere is entirely different. That is because the majority of members are usually there to have fun while training to attain some proficiency in the game. The trainers have to create training sessions that are interesting enough for kids who are not driven by the dream of playing in the soccer leagues someday.

Alternatively, the kids might have a contest among themselves as to who can ram the ball with his head the farthest or who can dribble the ball on his knees the longest. As you can see by now, youth soccer includes many derivative games that kids of all ages can play.

On the internet, there are sites where you can read descriptions of derivative soccer games for kids which are based on practice routines. Some of the game routines that you can read are so simple and safe that they can be played in your own backyard, if it is big enough. In fact, it might be a good idea for you, if the kids in your neighborhood are idle on weekends to buy yourself a soccer ball, read up on the simple games that can be played with it on the web and start your own neighborhood soccer club.

Soccer clubs also have serious training for full blown professional games for those of their members who are aspiring to become professionals one day. Although soccer in the US is not as prestigious as it is in the UK, for instance, things seem to be picking up for the sport with so many associations mushrooming in many states.

Throughout the US there are many youth clubs who have teams participating in these games. A great number of these clubs are professionally managed enough to become members of the United States Soccer Federation. That is the organization that manages soccer in the US. The largest individual soccer association in the US is appropriately called US Youth Soccer.

With about a million members today, US Youth Soccer is composed mostly of volunteers many of whom are coaches who have found their calling teaching young people how to become proficient in the sport.

In deference to their many young members, these clubs usually have a distinct sub-groupings to segregate those who play for fun and recreation from those who want to compete in the national league games.

Most kids will fit in with the better soccer clubs. The US Youth Soccer organization, being the largest of these clubs is worth looking into. They have different programs for different age groups. They also adapt their trainings and games to the capability of the member and his purpose in joining the club. Kids can join just to have fun with other kids. On the other hand, they may also join to train themselves seriously for professional soccer.

Cast Iron Pots in Japan

By Alteo On February 4, 2011 No Comments

although the original cast iron tea pots appeared in China sometime during the 13th or 14th centuries, it did not take long for the Japanese people to adopt it for their use in brewing sencha, or loose tea leaves instead of tea that had been crushed into a powdered form.

Around 400 years ago, the Chines first presented sencha to Japan. Sencha was used not only for enjoyment, but also in medicine, to cure physical and psychological ailments. Well-educated, higher members of Japanese society used sencha to show their disapproval against chanoyu, or a formal tea ceremony for drinking tea by the ruling class. They used matcha as their traditional powdered green tea.  The well-educated members of Japanese society drank sencha to show their resentment against chanoyu, a very formal, ceremonial tea preparation by the ruling class who used matcha, or powdered green tea leaves instead of sencha.

As sencha became the usual way of drinking tea with cast iron tea pots, tetsubin – the traditional Japanese name for these pots – was the typical way of drinking tea in Japan. This brought a sense of informality and warmth to tea ceremonies that could be used with friends and family.

Tetsubin were originally intended only for the use of boiling water and getting tea leaves brewed, so they weren’t painted in any fancy way. The 19th century brought about changes in that regard however, when teapots became decorative and status indications of how wealthy a family was. In fact some teapot makers decorated their pots with flowers, figures, and ceremonial designs that they then layered with silver, gold, or copper inside the pots.  Later, in the 19th century, these cast iron tea pots became more than functional kitchen implements but became viewed as status symbols. Makers of these tea pots began decorating the plain, gray cast iron with relief pictures of flowers, geometric figures, and other small designs, while placing layers of silver, copper and gold on the inside of the cast iron tea pots.

Iwate and Yamagata, two prefectures (counties) in Japan later became renowned for creating the most sought-after tetsubins because of their beautiful designs, high quality, and affordable prices.

Cast iron is a type of material that is great for retaining heat and staying durable, so it is popular for more than brewing tea. In fact many people saw improvements in their health thanks to the use of cast iron teapots. There was an iron deficiency which was recognized and later lessened by the use of cast iron.  It was also discovered that because of the iron, people who suffered from iron deficiency also benefitted from eating and drinking food from cast iron tea pots.

Maintaining your tetsubin does involve a few specific actions to follow, such as remembering not to let tea remain in the tea pot for too long, since this may cause some rust to appear on the inside lining, if it is non-ceramic. Never wash your tea pot with scratchy scouring pads or use something other than a very mild dish detergent.

Tetsubin should be maintained and cared for with the process of carefully watching to make sure tea doesn’t sit in a pot for more than it should. This may lead to rusting in certain types of teapots. Don’t use harsh dish detergent or scratchy washing materials to clean pots, either, as these can scratch the surface of a pot.  Japanese tradition claims that the all-natural mineral coating which accumulates from brewing tea is beneficial for one’s health. Also, don’t let oil or salt lay on the surface of the tea pot as this could damage the surface.

A cast iron teapot makes a great gift for anyone and any age, and can do a great deal to lend to ambience in a kitchen. The appearance of a cast iron teapot is both unique and old-fashioned in some ways, providing a nice contrast to the typical modern settings we see in most kitchens of today. You can have a lot of use and enjoyment from a tetsubin, if you wish, as these cast iron pots are not only durable but also quite attractive and ceremonial. Its antique appearance is the perfect antithesis to the modern technology of today’s kitchenware and will give you years of enjoyment with the proper care.

The Creation of Cast Iron Teapots

By Alteo On February 3, 2011 No Comments

The Creation of Cast Iron Teapots

The cast iron teapots of today have become more popular than ever, especially for brewing tea leaves. This is largely due to the material they are forged from, cast iron. In fact the shape of the teapot also plays a part in their popularity. Because of the iron compounds found in meteorites, cast iron has become easier to make through the use of a blast furnace to create pig iron. Cast iron is manufactured by taking iron compounds, which only can be found in its pure form in meteorites, and melting it in a blast furnace which produces pig iron.

Once it is produced, this pig iron is then mixed with other metals which are used for cast iron. Beyond teapots, bridges and gates are also made of cast iron. Frying pans and of course teapots are popular for its use..

Once cast iron is finished it is poured into the mold of the teapot, at which point it has to cool under controlled conditions. Then, proper solidification of the pot is made possible, since it has to be separated from lower quality pots. This promotes the proper solidification which is necessary in order to separate the high grade cast iron teapots from the lower quality tea pots.

You can tell if cast iron has been cooled correctly by the grain of the surface. If there are minute, bubble-like specks visible on the outside of the tea pot, then you know it was not evenly cooled. Craftsmen who create these beautiful cast iron teapots have been trained by other experts for years; this is not an art you can learn in several weeks or even months.

Cast iron teapots are also popular because of the stainless steel basket sitting inside the pot which holds the tea leaves together while submerged in the boiling water. When the tea is ready, you just lift out the basket and pour the tea, with no mess to clean up.

The artistry involved in decorating a cast iron teapot also makes this utensil highly in demand. Experienced craftsmen carefully sand the edges of the tea pot with a special appliance meant for just this process. Then a shield of thin enamel is applied to the inner surface of the tea pot, which will last as long as the tea pot itself lasts. When this enamel is dry and solidly in place, a coat of paint is applied to the external surface of the tea pot which can be any color.

There is a lot of fun to owning these teapots, like the great things they can be used for beyond just tea making. These pots are both functional and attractive, and can be used to bring your kitchen or any other room to life. Teapots like this have a unique and rustic appearance, and make good wedding gifts. Cast iron pots are often created in Japan, and each has a unique and beautiful quality that is often unmatchable. Not only is it a functional kitchen utensil, a teapot can contribute to your home as a piece of arresting décor outside of the kitchen, complementing any room with a rustic or antique ambience. It would also make an outstanding gift, especially as a house-warming or wedding offering. Most cast iron teapots that are actually made in Japan will each have its own brand of individual elegance and symbolic decorations painted on the pot.

The Japanese say that plum blossoms symbolize strength and determination – and beauty as well. Coins are a symbol of prosperity and fortune. In addition, the various colors of a teapot are a symbol in themselves of specific aspects of life, like imperial red, bamboo green, and blue through spiritual immortality. Colors are also symbolic of concepts such as happiness and vitality, as indicated by the color of imperial red; bamboo green denotes peace and synchronization; and blue is the color of spiritual immortality.

The Beauty of Cast Iron Teapots

By Alteo On February 2, 2011 No Comments

Today’s exquisite cast iron teapots have become very popular especially when it comes to brewing tea. This is partly because of their outstanding make and quality through the use of cast iron. Benefits of a Cast Iron Teapot

By Alteo On February 1, 2011 No Comments

Beyond being a great addition to home accentuations, the cast iron teapot is also a good item for any tea enthusiasts or collectors of pots. The teapot is made from cast iron which is a metal that absorbs heat very well and brews amazing tea by soaking up tea flavors that are brewed in the pot. It also enhances other teas that are brewed later in the same pot, lending them a unique flavor through this cast iron teapot.  Because it is made from cast iron, a type of metal which efficiently preserves and absorbs heat, it also brews great tasting tea because of cast iron’s ability to soak up all tea flavors that have previously been brewed in the pot and enrich other teas which are subsequently brewed in the teapot .

Liquids that are heated in cast iron teapot situations are usually hot for hours on end because the metal is so good at keeping in heat. Cast iron was more than likely invented in the 14th century in China, and used to make little statues and possibly cannon balls or other weapons.  It is believed that cast iron was probably invented in 14th century China and was initially used to construct small statues and weapons such as cannon balls.

The Japanese people eventually started to drink tea for ceremonies and other similar events at which point they started using tetsubin, or Japanese cast iron teapots. They saw this type of pot was able to brew very good tea leaves and also keep in the heat and flavor of tea.

Cast iron was later implemented in the construction of steam engines during the 19th century industrial revolution occurring in England, which contributed immensely to the transportation of goods and the rise of capitalism. This was also when the cast iron teapot became considered a sign of wealth and status among the upper crust.

Privileged women who owned such a teapot began to pass these down as heirlooms to their daughters when they got married, who in turn saved them and passed them onto their daughters as well. You can find these antique cast iron teapots for sale today online or in antique stores with prices varying from $100 up to $600, depending on the age and condition of the teapot.

When you want to protect a cast iron teapot it is important to clean and store the teapot properly. This means waiting until the teapot is completely cool when you touch it, and then you can wipe and rinse the pot.  Always wait until the pot in no longer warm to the touch before wiping and rinsing the pot.

Don’t use dish soap for cast iron cleaning since it could deteriorate the metal and even make the tea or boiled water taste icky and bitter. It is important to keep a trivet or protective device underneath the pot to keep it from getting scorch marks anywhere. You should also note that a cast iron teapot may develop rust residue. It won’t harm you even if you ingest it but you should note that it may accumulate.  If you are going to place the teapot on any kind of surface, remember to put a trivet underneath of it in order to prevent scorch marks. Sometimes, but not often, a cast iron teapot will develop a very slight rust residue. This will not harm you, however, if you ingest some of it.

Even if you get rust accumulations, it is no big deal for a pot since you can use a small brush to get rid of these. There are some chemicals known as tannic acid which allow you to blend this with the rust and makes a protective covering over each pot. This turns the rust traces to be small and even unnoticeable in some cases. In fact certain tea experts prefer tea served from light rust film coated pots. If you want, you can get normal modern teapots of cast iron which have enamel interiors, preventing rust buildup.  In addition, there is a chemical in tea leaves called tannic acid which blends with rust and creates a thin protective film over the cast iron which will virtually eliminate any subsequent appearances of rust. There are actually tea aficionados who say they like the way tea tastes when served from a lightly rusted pot. Today, however, you can purchase modern cast iron teapots which are created with an enamel interior to prevent any possible build-up of rust.

Cast Iron Tea Pots Are Special but Inexpensive Gifts

By Alteo On January 31, 2011 No Comments

Cast Iron Tea Pots Are Special but Inexpensive Gifts

The most celebrated cast iron tea pots are the Japanese ‘tetsubin.’ You can find them online as well as in live stores. You can see them in various shapes; sometimes spherical, sometimes oval, sometimes square and even, occasionally, flattened. There are even those which are shaped like Mount Fujiyama with a flat base and the sides tapering as they reach the top. The iron itself is often embossed with images of flowers, bamboo plants and dragons. Apart from the intrinsic value of the material, the skill and expertise in mixing the ingredients of the cast iron are also important price-determining factors. The manufacturing process is not simple. First, iron that has been mixed with carbon duel is smelted; the resulting material is pig iron. After checking the quality of the pig iron, it is once more melted down and combined with scrap iron and fragments of steel. When that mixture is evenly melted, it is poured into the mold. The next step, cooling the metal, is also very important because if the cast iron tea pot is not cooled uniformly, it will be defective and lacking in durability. The quality of the tea pot is also determined by the right proportion of the ingredients used to make the molten iron.

Starting with pig iron, which as to be re-melted, the manufacturers then have to mix scrap iron and small amounts of steel in with the melted pig iron, which is then poured into a mold for the tea pot. The cooling process is what gives the cast iron tea pot its fine quality as a tea brewing implement because if it is not uniformly cooled, the tea pot will have a rough surface and visibly imperfect cast. Contamination is another problem occurring in the process, such as porosity or flaws in the metal, which can produce a defective product. The ability to properly mix cast iron and fashion a beautiful cast iron tea pot is something that is learned only by practice and experience. Sizes of each tea pot can vary from small to a large pot which can contain over twenty ounces.
